UPDATE:  The winner is Tracie  [email protected]  Congratulations!

Do you crave fresh veggies and homemade soup?  If so, you’ll love a visit to Sweet Tomatoes.  Sweet Tomatoes is a soup and salad buffet.  Unlike traditional restaurant buffet food that is often heavy and fattening, the selection at Sweet Tomatoes is fresh and light.  In addition, if you or someone you love is vegetarian or vegan, you can go to Sweet Tomatoes online site and find those dishes specifically designated for vegetarians.

The company began in 1978 as Souplantation in California.  Their mission was to bring fresh, wholesome foods including veggies, soups and homemade breads to the restaurant.  In 1983, the company expanded and now has over 100 locations in 15 states.  In California, the restaurant maintains the Souplantation name; outside California the restaurants are called Sweet Tomatoes.

My family had a chance to visit Sweet Tomatoes, and we loved it.  My husband, who is a big salad lover delighted in the huge salad bar.  He also tried nearly all of the 8 fresh soups available and especially liked the Asian Ginger Broth soup that allowed patrons to add their own ingredients.  He added mushrooms, tofu, and onion and really enjoyed the flavor.  (This was part of their two week feature of Asian recipes.)

I tried a bowl of the chili with their fresh bread.  Often chili is too greasy for me, but this one wasn’t.  It had a nice taste without being overpowering.  The bread was chewy and delicious.

I am sensitive to salt and find many restaurants’ soups too salty.  However, their soups were perfectly seasoned and not too salty.  They did taste fresh.

Sweet Tomatoes also features dishes that cater more to children.  Both of my kids had the macaroni and cheese and blueberry muffins.  (The muffins were a huge hit!)  My son also ate an Asian salad and enjoyed it.  He is a noodle lover, but he didn’t care for the cold noodles he tried.

Sweet Tomatoes is always doing something to vary their menu.  Recently they offered 8 weeks around the world.  Every two weeks their menu changed to reflect a different area of the world.  When we visited the focus was on Asia.  Now, for the month of October they are having guest favorites month and are highlighting some of their most popular menu items; these change every week.

We really enjoyed our trip to Sweet Tomatoes and plan to go back.  If you would like to go to Sweet Tomatoes or Souplantation now, sign up for their e-mail list to receive great coupons.
