If you could travel back in time and view the lifestyle of people 60 years ago, things were very different. First of all, there wasn’t as large of a divide between the wealthy and the middle class, but there also wasn’t the need for people to flash their cash either. Society as a whole was much more focused on family and a strong work ethic, not a fist full of dollars.

Did you know that the majority of homeowners back then didn’t even have a mortgage on their house? They owned it free and clear. Do you know how many people own their home free and clear today? Heck, even some retirees are still making payments on their houses. Over 99% of homeowners still have an open loan from the bank. More so than ever, we should be trying to save up our money and pay down our debts, even if the interest rate on the loan is low. So what areas should we look to save money?

Where (and how) to save money

Just like in business, the first place you should reduce your expenses is the easiest place. If your action has an impact on the bill, but has very little impact on the finished product, then that is a great place to start. Within a residence, I would start saving some money by reducing the number of times I go out to eat each month. If you are dining out 3-4 times a week, that’s a bit too excessive. By cutting that down to just once per week, you could save yourself $250+ a month and you won’t hardly notice the difference in your day to day life.

When you are buying the necessities (like clothes, food, and toiletries), be sure to look for coupons. If you are in the store, you can do this on your smartphone and have them scan the code right from your screen. If you are shopping online, you can quickly hunt some promo code sites to see if you can find something.

Finally, when you are having fun, it’s important to save money as well. We all need to have fun once in a while, but don’t forget that your games might have promo codes too. For instance, Gala Bingo Online often has promotions. If you’re heading out for a game of bowling, they often have promotions too. Keep your eye out for promotions all the time and you will find yourself savings loads of money – both on those necessities and the fun.
