I have been Paying Myself First for almost 25 years now. It is the only way that I can save consistently. If you don't set something aside for yourself, expenses will quickly eat up the rest of your money and you will remain broke.

BTW, I learned this from The Richest Man in Babylon when I was young. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is struggling with finances in any way.

This is a great article. Thanks Ray, I would also suggest that individuals struggling to save read Richest Man in Babylon - it’s a pretty powerful novel.

I list Savings as a category in my budget so I know for a fact that I should have the money to pay myself so when I do pay myself first, I don't have to worry about running out of funds before the next paycheck.

Hi

This is good advice, as it gives saving (and your long-term goals) the priority they should have, rather than putting them behind a latte, a dvd, and any number of other insignificant things that you might spend your money on in a month.
