Great post Ray
Long-term thinking has given me comfort in the knowledge that retirement will happen.
I'm past my 20somethings, been there and done that (making every mistake in the book). Made 6 figures in my 20's, spent 6+figures in my 20's. What motivated me to a long-term focus? 2 things: 1) Kids - they are our future. I don't give them money but I want to give them opportunities to learn and grow. 2) Realization that there are no guarantees in life. Social Security in the U.S. will not be available for me. More and more companies do not provide pensions. More and more companies fail to fulfill promises of pensions. Who will prepare for your long-term financial health, if you don't prepare for yourself?
After 10 years of hard work, adjustments to lifestyle and living within my means I finally no longer worry about being able to retire. It's just a question of when.
