Yes, that's really a great idea and I do like all of it. I also suggest, that learning to cook with your love ones would be a good idea too. It's fun and enjoyable. You can share what you know and have a taste together. Or going to a beach is another way, it will surely gives you a comfy and refreshing feeling. You can bring few snacks, and make good memories with your family. Well I know it's not new, but if you'll try these ideas, better go for green and use stainless steel container instead of plastic bags as your food stacking container. =)

My kids and I love to geocache, if you’ve got any kind of gps device for the most part you can do it, it’s a blast and once you’ve got a gps there is no recurring cost other than gas.

I also suggest going to a State Park. They charge ~$10/car so that is relatively cheap for a family. Bring a lunch and spend the day walking some trails and bird/bug hunting as above. Most state parks also have a visitor/wildlife center where they put on free presentations that involve either showing off animals or you can learn a skill like animal print tracking.
