the alternative income that I’ve created could cover the loss of my wife’s income if/when we ever have children. Having that alternate income also means that i’m more secure in an unsure environment – if I were to lose my job since I make enough money to cover the basics AND we have an emergency fund built up. Because of those things we’re feeling pretty secure.

I completely agree with adding additional streams of income. I started writing for eHow about a year ago and I now have a passive income stream of $175/month, which I hope to increase.

@ Ken: Landscaping I think is a great skill to have and if you can make some extra income from it the better it will be.

@ GP: I agree I think the stock market crash sort of forced many people to rethink their retirement plans. blogging can be a great source of secondary income, but as with anything it will take time and effort. i have not been working much on monetizing my blog yet, still had some decent income. Maybe I should work on that
